What To Expect
The decision to start therapy can be a difficult one, particularly if you have never been in therapy before. I look at the first couple of sessions as an opportunity to get to know one another and see how the fit feels. It is a chance for you to talk about what your concerns are and what you hope to get out of your therapy.
The focus of your therapy sessions will be the goals that you have set for yourself. While I may gently direct the flow of our sessions, I see our work together as a partnership and what we talk about (or don’t talk about) is ultimately up to you.
Building trust in the therapeutic relationship takes time and patience, and yet the goal is not for you to be in therapy forever! I usually work with clients for a period of 1 to 5 years. This amount of time allows us to address the presenting concerns, but also provides ample space for learning the skills and patterns of thinking that will empower you to feel more confident in facing life’s challenges in the future.
